There are countless types of tiles available in the market, and choosing the right one requires some basic knowledge. Today, we’ll take a closer look at one of the most popular ceramic tile options in recent years – polished tiles. These tiles have become a favorite among homeowners due to their durability, aesthetic appeal, and versatility.
Polished tiles are known for their high wear resistance, frost resistance, and ability to resist stains, acids, and alkalis. They are also long-lasting and can offer a decorative finish that rivals natural marble. When inspecting polished tiles, it's best to do so under good lighting. The surface should be free from color variations, cracks, scratches, or unevenness. A high-quality polished tile will have a bright, glossy finish with strong reflective properties. Good quality tiles usually exhibit four key characteristics: they look shiny, sound clear when tapped, feel heavy in hand, and have no visible flaws.
To test the quality of polished tiles, you can apply a small amount of ink or water on the surface for about two minutes, just like how you would test marble. Afterward, rinse it with water or wipe it with a cloth. If there’s only a faint mark, it means the tile has a low water absorption rate, which indicates good stain resistance and stable physical and chemical properties. However, if there are noticeable or deep marks, the tile may not be well vitrified, indicating poor quality.
Another effective way to assess the quality is by tapping the tile with your fingers. Listen carefully to the sound it makes. A crisp, ringing sound suggests high density and proper sintering. If the sound is dull or rough, the tile may not be fully fired, leading to lower density and weaker strength. A hoarse or muffled sound could indicate defects such as internal cracks. In general, a high-quality polished tile should feel heavy and solid when held, with a dense structure and high hardness, ensuring long-term performance and durability.
