Academician Donates 10 Million Yuan to Support Youth Innovation

Academician Shen Jiaxiang, a 93-year-old member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and professor at Tianjin University, may have retired from his official duties, but his passion for medicinal chemistry remains as strong as ever. He still spends time in the lab, surrounded by beakers and bottles, continuing to explore the world of science. Recently, he and his wife, Chen Yanna, made a generous donation of one million yuan to Tianjin University. Their goal is to support young researchers in their innovative endeavors. This act of generosity was not just a spontaneous decision—it was a direct response to President Xi Jinping’s recent emphasis on innovation-driven development. Shen expressed his deep satisfaction, saying that he felt it was his duty to contribute in any way he could. “President Xi Jinping encouraged us all to innovate, to think differently, and to push forward,” he said. “If I can do something, even a small part, I feel very happy.” According to Shen Chibing, one of Shen Jiaxiang's grandchildren, this donation accounted for about half of the family's savings. A quarter was set aside for his wife, another for emergencies, and the rest was allocated for experimental projects. Shen himself has no personal financial plans beyond what is necessary. A PhD from the University of London, Shen had always dreamed of using science to serve his country. In the early days of the People's Republic of China, he worked hard to advance antibiotic research and the local production of vitamins. Now, he sees a new era of innovation taking shape. “In the past, we did little research on new drugs and were far behind foreign countries,” he said. “They are focused on innovation, while we used to rely more on imitation. President Xi’s message is clear: we must rise up and innovate ourselves.” He is particularly pleased to see many overseas talents returning to China and contributing to its scientific growth. Last year, the School of Pharmacy at Tianjin University welcomed Professor Jay Siegel, the first "Dean of Foreign Affairs" in over 60 years. Shen, dressed in a bright red Tang suit, shared his joy with the university president, Li Jiajun, expressing his hope that more top international scientists would choose to work in China. After receiving the donation, President Li vowed to honor Shen’s trust by managing the university well and making the School of Pharmacy globally competitive. A special fund named after Shen Jiaxiang will be established to reward outstanding teachers and students in the pharmaceutical field. Professor Siegel, who visits Shen regularly, praised his generosity and dedication. In his eyes, Shen’s actions reflect the four virtues of China: patriotism, innovation, loyalty, and tolerance. Shen’s nephew, Bao Zongye, noted that Shen’s lifelong dream has always been to develop China’s modern pharmaceutical industry. This donation is a reflection of that dream. Although Shen feels he has done less research in recent years, he believes that giving back to society and supporting the next generation is a meaningful way to repay the country. Despite his age, Shen remains deeply engaged with current events and continues to think creatively. His grandson, Shen Chibing, shared that Grandpa often comes up with new ideas unexpectedly. Students help him find relevant literature, and he encourages them to join in his research. For example, last year, after trying Japanese natto, he became interested in vitamin K and its potential benefits for osteoporosis. He then started a project with two family nannies and a student to study the fermentation process and analyze the vitamin content. From everyday observations, Shen finds inspiration for innovation. Today, he has fulfilled his long-held wish to donate and placed his hopes for the future on the younger generation. His story is a powerful reminder that age is no barrier to curiosity, creativity, and contribution.
