Charging while driving NSK develops a new generation of hub motors

At present, the electric vehicle industry still has practical problems such as inconvenient charging and large energy consumption in battery production, which hinders the further promotion of electric vehicles. Automobile manufacturers hope to develop efficient driving technologies for vehicles with lower energy consumption. Recently, the Japanese parts company NSK has developed the "third-generation wireless charging in-wheel motor (IWM)" technology that can directly obtain power from the road where the charging coil is arranged, and successfully carried out actual vehicle verification.

Hub motor technology, that is, installing the motor in the wheel, its biggest feature is to integrate the power device, transmission device and brake device into the hub, omitting the clutch, transmission, transmission, differential and other components. The wireless charging hub motor integrates the wireless charging circuit into the wheel, and can use the inductive charging coil on the road to directly charge the motor and store energy.

It is reported that the "third-generation wireless charging hub motor while driving" was jointly developed by NSK and a research team composed of the University of Tokyo, Bridgestone, ROHM, and Toyo Electric. Compared with the second-generation products released in 2017, the third-generation products released this time will increase the wireless power transmission capability from a single wheel of 10kW to 20kW. Just install a wireless charging system with this capability in the area in front of traffic lights, and electric car users can solve the charging problem and travel with confidence. If the smart city with this system is realized, the convenience of using electric vehicles will be greatly improved.

At present, NSK is studying the actual installation of the driving power infrastructure by analyzing and simulating the driving data on public roads. In order to realize the practical application of the "wireless charging hub motor" proposed in this project, NSK strives to enter the road verification stage by 2025.
