In the heart of Shuangyuan Village, located in Wenfeng Street, Tinghu District, Sun Xiaoyan plays a vital role as a labor protector. Her daily work revolves around ensuring that residents receive essential support and services related to their livelihoods. On March 19th, a reporter from Yancheng Evening News had the opportunity to shadow her and gain insight into her important contributions to the community.
Sun Xiaoyan’s responsibilities include assisting retired workers with their pensions and helping those in need access social security benefits. One such case is Xu Xiufeng, a 63-year-old former worker at the Spring Factory. After being laid off over a decade ago, she relied on an old agricultural insurance system that provided only about 100 yuan per month. With Sun Xiaoyan’s help, more than 20 retired employees, including Xu, were able to transition to a proper pension system, increasing their monthly income to over 800 yuan.
“She’s like family,†Xu said, referring to Sun as “Sister Sun.†Thanks to Sun’s persistent efforts in coordinating with local authorities and companies, the issue of unpaid insurance was finally resolved. This change has significantly improved the quality of life for many retirees, who now enjoy stable incomes and annual increases.
Currently, over 500 retired residents in Shuangyuan Village have been assisted through the “guarantee to do their best†initiative. Sun ensures that every resident is regularly visited to understand their needs and provide necessary support within policy limits. She also emphasizes the importance of timely registration for retirees entering the community.
Another example is Chen Aiping, a single mother who faced severe hardships after both she and her husband were laid off in 2000. With no income and a husband requiring long-term care, the family struggled to make ends meet. Sun Xiaoyan stepped in, applying for assistance programs and helping them secure pension insurance. When Chen suffered a serious injury years later, Sun not only helped her access medical aid but also ensured her family received annual hardship subsidies.
Sun also works closely with families facing financial difficulties, visiting them regularly to assess their situations and apply for relief. Despite limited funds, the community always strives to secure what it can for its most vulnerable members.
As a labor protector, Sun understands the importance of safeguarding workers’ rights, especially for young and migrant workers who often lack awareness of their insurance rights. She believes it’s better to be proactive now rather than let people face problems later. Whether it's handling paperwork for retirement insurance or explaining complex procedures to elderly residents, Sun takes on these tasks personally.
With nearly 10,000 residents in the area, Sun is the sole full-time labor protector, managing ten village groups spread across two streets. Her work is demanding, but she sees it as a responsibility and a passion. For her, serving the community isn’t just a job—it’s a calling. As she puts it, “It’s not about the big things; it’s about the small, everyday actions that make a real difference.â€
