The first fully solar-powered train in Hungary has begun its trial run in a picturesque area near the capital, Budapest. This eco-friendly and comfortable train operates without harming the natural surroundings, making it an ideal choice for scenic travel. The soft whistle you just heard is not from a traditional train, but from a small solar-powered "Veli" train that has been running smoothly in the Ipoh Forest area for several months.
Capable of reaching speeds up to 25 kilometers per hour, the Veli has already covered over 10,000 kilometers. Its innovative design was developed by the Hungary Ganz Plan Engineering Company, with the goal of one day replacing conventional trains with clean energy alternatives. Ganz Project Engineering CEO Sándor is optimistic about this vision, emphasizing the environmental benefits of the train.
“This train represents a significant breakthrough because it doesn’t produce any pollution. It lacks an internal combustion engine, ensuring that the strict nature reserve remains untouched,†he said. The Veli is powered entirely by solar panels mounted on its roof, and it also uses a kinetic energy recovery system—similar to technology found in Formula 1 racing cars—to store braking energy and use it as additional power. This combination allows the train to function efficiently even on cloudy days.
According to Laszlo, a spokesperson for Yibo Yi Forest Park, the Veli’s technology is unique. “While other rail vehicles use solar panels at stations, we’ve integrated them directly onto the moving train. This makes our approach more innovative and sustainable.â€
Passengers traveling on the Veli enjoy a quiet and peaceful journey, free from the noise of traditional trains. The train features movable seats designed with accessibility in mind, offering greater convenience for people with disabilities. The designers aimed to minimize the impact on the environment, and so far, the project has yielded positive results.
“We’re still working through some challenges, but if this model proves successful, we hope to develop larger versions in the future,†the park spokesperson added.
