Hungary's first full solar power train trial run

In a picturesque location near Budapest, Hungary has launched its first fully solar-powered train for trial operations. This eco-friendly and comfortable train is designed to minimize environmental impact while offering an enjoyable ride through the scenic area. Unlike traditional trains, it runs silently, making it ideal for nature lovers who want to experience the surroundings without disturbance. The sound you just heard isn’t from a conventional train—it’s the gentle hum of the “Veli” train, a small solar-powered model that has been in service for several months in the Ipoh Forest area near the capital. It can reach speeds of up to 25 kilometers per hour and has already covered over 10,000 kilometers, proving its reliability and efficiency. The innovative concept behind the “Veli” was developed by the Ganz Plan Engineering Company in Hungary. The company aims to eventually replace traditional trains with clean energy alternatives. Ganz Project Engineering CEO Sandor is optimistic about the future of such technology, stating, “This train is a major breakthrough because it doesn’t emit any pollutants. It doesn’t have an internal combustion engine, so it doesn’t harm the strict natural reserve here.” The Veli is powered entirely by solar panels installed on the roof of the train. Additionally, it uses a kinetic energy recovery system inspired by Formula 1 racing technology. This system captures energy during braking and stores it for later use, ensuring the train can still operate efficiently even on cloudy days. Laszlo, a spokesperson for Yibo Yi Forest Park, highlighted the uniqueness of this design: “We’ve implemented a technology that collects solar energy directly on the vehicle itself. While there are other solar-powered rail vehicles around the world, they usually rely on solar panels at stations. Our innovation is having the panels mounted on the moving train, which is a significant advancement.” Passengers traveling on the “Veli” enjoy a quiet and peaceful journey, free from the noise of traditional trains. The train also features movable seats designed with accessibility in mind, making it more convenient for people with disabilities. The park’s spokesperson emphasized that the designers made great efforts to ensure the train had minimal impact on the environment. “Our goal is to achieve positive results through this project. We’ve encountered some challenges, but we’re working to solve them. If this train proves successful, we hope to build larger versions in the future,” they added.
