At 59 years old, Mr. Tian never had more than a junior high school education, but his passion for electrical circuits has always been strong. From an early age, he was fascinated by how things worked, especially when it came to electricity. This curiosity eventually led him to develop an idea: to build a solar-powered tricycle. After six years of hard work, countless trials, and spending over 4,000 yuan, he finally succeeded in creating a solar tricycle that runs without gasoline and doesn't require refueling. He even managed to obtain a utility model patent certificate for his invention. Last week, Mr. Tian showed the vehicle to a group of reporters who were amazed by his achievement.
A Solar Vehicle Built Over Six Years
"Don’t be fooled by its simple look—this car is actually quite functional," Mr. Tian said with pride. "It has a handle, brakes, a hand brake, a battery charge indicator, and forward/reverse gears. It works just like a regular electric vehicle." The reporter observed three large solar panels on top and on the sides of the vehicle, along with two voltmeters at the front. Inside, there are two batteries that can be charged alternately by the solar panels. On sunny days, the tricycle runs entirely on solar energy. When it rains, it switches to battery power, maintaining a speed of up to 40 kilometers per hour.
"I first got the idea after watching a TV program in 2005. I realized that energy resources are becoming scarce, and pollution is getting worse. I used to work as an electrician, so I thought about building a solar-powered vehicle," Mr. Tian explained. Since then, he dedicated six years to research, testing, and construction before finally completing his solar tricycle.
Dismantling Eight Motorcycles to Build One
The biggest challenge, according to Mr. Tian, was matching the voltage from the solar panels with the battery's requirements. "Even though I have many years of experience in electrical work, I still spent a lot of time finding the right battery and adjusting the voltage properly," he said. At one point, a battery was damaged due to excessive voltage from the Solar Panel. "There were so many issues during the process—not just with the battery and panels, but also with the layout. I bought eight used tricycles, took them apart, and built two solar tricycles from scratch."
Legal Requirements for Driving on the Road
Despite his success, can Mr. Tian drive his solar tricycle on public roads? According to staff from the Municipal Vehicle Administration Institute, although Mr. Tian holds a patent for his invention, it doesn't automatically allow him to drive it legally. "His vehicle is considered a motor vehicle. To drive it on the road, he must meet certain qualifications, be listed in the Ministry of Industry and Information’s catalog, and register with the traffic police department to get the necessary license. Only then can he legally operate the vehicle on the road," the official explained. As it stands now, driving an assembled or modified vehicle without proper documentation is illegal and could result in penalties.
