Problems in the Installation of Guided Wave Radar Level Gauge

(1) When using a guided wave radar level gauge to measure liquid materials, the sensor's axis should remain perpendicular to the surface of the medium. However, when measuring solid materials, the material tends to form a pile with a certain angle of repose. In this case, the sensor should be tilted at an appropriate angle to ensure accurate measurement and reduce signal interference. (2) It is important to avoid any devices that may cause false reflections within the emission beam of the radar. Specifically, obstacles should not be located in the first 1/3 of the cone-shaped area directly in front of the antenna, as closer objects tend to generate stronger false signals. If such obstacles cannot be avoided, it is recommended to use a refraction plate to weaken the intensity of the false echoes. This helps the sensor distinguish between real and false signals more effectively. (3) Avoid positioning the sensor near feed openings, as these areas can create false reflections due to material flow or turbulence, which may interfere with the accuracy of the readings. (4) The sensor should not be installed at the center of an arched tank, as this can cause enhanced false echoes. Similarly, it should not be placed too close to the tank wall. The optimal installation position is typically at half the radius of the tank, where the signal path is more stable and less affected by internal structures. (5) Avoid installing guided wave radar level gauges in areas with strong turbulence, such as those caused by mixing or vigorous chemical reactions. In such cases, it is advisable to use a waveguide or bypass pipe to provide a more stable measurement environment and minimize signal distortion. (6) If the sensor is mounted on a pipe, the antenna must extend beyond the pipe’s edge. For a flared antenna, it should protrude by at least 10mm. A rod antenna should extend by up to 100 or 250mm, and the接管 (take-over) should have a minimum diameter of 250mm. Increasing the diameter of the take-over can help reduce interference from echoes caused by the接管 itself. (7) For waveguide antennas, the inner surface of the waveguide must be smooth to prevent signal loss or distortion. The waveguide must extend to the required minimum length below the opening to ensure proper measurement within the pipeline. The sensor's type plate should be aligned with the axis of the waveguide opening. If the dielectric constant of the measured material is less than 4, a reflector should be installed at the end of the waveguide, or the end should be bent to redirect the bottom reflection, improving signal clarity and measurement accuracy.
