Researchers have developed super durable new glass that can be used for millennia

According to a statement from the University of Chicago, understanding how to make ultra-stable mature glass can help researchers create more solid materials. Stable glass manufacturing techniques also enable the absence of crystals in the molecular structure of the drug and therefore enable faster dissolution in the body. This is a super-hard glass made by a peculiar vaporization process. Different colors on the glass are caused by thickness variations.

This method of manufacturing glass is different from the manufacture of vases and juice cups. Household glassware is manufactured by injecting molten glass into a mold for cooling. But Mark Eddinger, a chemist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, made new glass by heating the glass to a gas state and allowing the gas to precipitate layer by layer onto a hard surface. The result is a stronger, denser material that can withstand higher temperatures than the glass made by traditional methods.

Erdinger made this new glass for the first time a few years ago and discovered its unique characteristics. However, he could never be sure whether he made an evolved ordinary glass or a completely new material. So he collaborated with Pablo, a doctoral student at the University of Wisconsin, to write a computer program to confirm his research.

This program simulates the steam stratification process and finds that he did create a super stable new glass. Compared with the new glass, the traditional method of manufacturing glass has a messy and uneven structure. This program also helped Pablo and his team understand how different arrangements of glass molecules lead to differences in strength between traditional glass and super glass.
