42CrMo round steel is a high-strength alloy steel known for its excellent mechanical properties. Its tensile strength σb is ≥985 MPa (100), and yield strength σs is ≥835 MPa (85). The elongation δ5 is ≥12%, and the area shrinkage ψ is ≥45%. Impact work Akv is ≥63 J, with an impact toughness value αkv of ≥78 J/cm² (8). The hardness is ≤229 HB, and the sample blank size is 25 mm.
Heat treatment specifications include quenching at 850°C followed by oil cooling, and tempering at 550°C with water or oil cooling. The steel can be delivered in a heat-treated condition (normalizing, annealing, or high-temperature tempering) or in a non-heat-treated state, as specified in the contract.
42CrMo round steel offers high static strength, impact toughness, and fatigue resistance. It has superior hardenability compared to 40Cr steel, with a critical hardenable diameter in oil ranging from 16 to 78 mm. This material maintains good creep strength and long-term strength at high temperatures, making it suitable for operation up to 500°C. Additionally, it exhibits excellent low-temperature toughness, functioning effectively down to -110°C.
The steel is classified as fine-grain steel, showing no tendency to overheat during heat treatment, with minimal quenching deformation. However, it is prone to first-type temper brittleness. Machinability is acceptable, and while cold deformation plasticity is moderate, weldability is poor. Welding requires preheating to 150–400°C, followed by stress relief treatment after welding.
This material is commonly used for components subjected to high loads, especially under impact, vibration, bending, and torsion. Applications include axles, engine transmissions, motor shafts, turbine spindles, rolling mill herringbone gears, crankshafts, connecting rods, fasteners, and petroleum industry perforators. It is also used for bolts working below 400°C and nuts below 510°C, as well as thick-walled seamless high-pressure tubes in chemical equipment operating between 450–500°C.
42CrMo can replace large-section gears and high-load transmission shafts, turbine generator rotors, and support shafts with diameters less than 500 mm, substituting for 40CrNi steel. It is ideal for parts requiring high strength, impact toughness, fatigue resistance, and good hardenability. Quenching deformation is minimal, cutting performance is moderate, and weldability is limited.
