42CrMo round steel is a high-performance alloy steel known for its excellent mechanical properties. Its tensile strength (σb) is ≥985 MPa (100), and yield strength (σs) is ≥835 MPa (85). The elongation (δ5) is ≥12%, while the area reduction (ψ) is ≥45%. The impact work (Akv) is ≥63 J, and the impact toughness (αkv) reaches ≥78 J/cm² (8). The hardness is ≤229 HB. The sample size is 25 mm.
Heat treatment specifications include quenching at 850°C followed by oil cooling, and tempering at 550°C with water or oil cooling. The steel can be delivered in heat-treated conditions such as normalization, annealing, or high-temperature tempering, or in a non-heat-treated state. The delivery condition should be specified in the contract.
This steel exhibits high static strength, impact toughness, and fatigue resistance. It has better hardenability than 40Cr steel, with a critical hardening diameter in oil of 16–78 mm. It maintains good creep and long-term strength at high temperatures, up to 500°C, and retains good low-temperature toughness down to -110°C. It is a fine-grained steel with minimal distortion during quenching but is prone to first-type temper brittleness. Machinability is acceptable, and it shows moderate plasticity during cold deformation. However, its weldability is poor and requires preheating between 150–400°C, followed by stress relief after welding.
Common applications include axles, engine transmissions, turbine spindles, rolling mill gears, crankshafts, connecting rods, fasteners, and parts used in the petroleum industry. It is also suitable for bolts and nuts operating under different temperature ranges. In chemical equipment, it is used for thick-walled pressure vessels working in non-corrosive environments.
The steel can be used after general quenching and tempering, or after surface quenching using high- and medium-frequency methods. It is ideal for components subjected to high loads, shocks, vibrations, bending, and torsion. It can replace 40CrNi steel for large-section gears and transmission shafts, as well as for turbine generator rotors with diameters less than 500 mm.
