Samsung Joins Hands with Carbon Fibers to Develop New Smart TV Materials

Using carbon fiber materials in digital products and even home appliances is no longer a new concept. We've already seen items like notebooks, tablets, and TVs made from carbon fiber. However, for Samsung, plastic has long been considered one of the lightest and most effective materials, especially in its Galaxy smartphone line.

But now, Samsung is taking a different approach. Recently, the company announced a partnership with SGL Group, a leading specialist in graphene and carbon fiber materials. The two companies will form a joint venture, with each holding an equal share. This collaboration is expected to benefit not only Samsung's shipbuilding and construction divisions but also other key departments indirectly. For example, they are already planning trial production of smart TVs made from carbon fiber.

Create the coolest TV? Samsung joins hands with carbon fiber materials company

In a statement, SGL highlighted that their carbon fiber materials offer excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, low weight, and high resistance to heat and corrosion, along with strong mechanical properties. These features could be beneficial across various industries, including metallurgy, automotive manufacturing, chemicals, semiconductors, solar energy, LEDs, and even lithium-ion batteries.

It seems that carbon fiber isn't just about making cool-looking TVs anymore. It could also play a significant role in future OLED TVs, especially when paired with flexible OLED screens. The resilience and strength of carbon fiber make it a perfect match for next-generation display technologies.

The Samsung Petrochemical Division added that this partnership with SGL will help strengthen Samsung’s overall business capabilities. These advancements won’t be limited to industrial applications; they could also have a major impact on consumer electronics, bringing innovative and high-performance products to the market.

This move by Samsung shows a clear shift towards more advanced materials that can enhance both functionality and design. With carbon fiber, the company is not just looking to improve performance—it's aiming to redefine what's possible in consumer electronics and beyond.
