Biogas fertilizer is a type of organic fertilizer that contains a full range of essential nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. It is particularly rich in volatile ammonia nitrogen, and if not applied correctly, it can lose its effectiveness and fail to deliver the desired yield improvements. Here are some key application techniques for biogas fertilizer:
First, it should not be stored for long periods. Once removed from the biogas digester, it should be applied directly to the field or soil. If time is limited, it can be temporarily piled outside the digester for no more than a day or two. Prolonged storage leads to significant loss of available nitrogen. Studies have shown that when biogas slurry is left to dry in the open air, total nitrogen loss can reach about 65%, while ammonia nitrogen loss may exceed 87%.
Biogas slurry works best as a base fertilizer. When applied to paddy fields, it's ideal to spread it evenly before plowing so that the mud and fertilizer mix well. The recommended application rate is approximately 2000 kg per mu (about 667 square meters). Applying it to dry soil, such as using spot application or furrow application, followed by covering with a layer of soil about 10 cm thick, helps reduce nutrient volatilization.
For top dressing, biogas liquid fertilizer should be diluted with water depending on the quality of the slurry and the crop’s growth stage. This prevents damage to young roots and leaves, ensuring safe and effective nutrient delivery.
Combining biogas fertilizer with chemical fertilizers can enhance overall efficiency. For instance, ammonia water and ammonium bicarbonate are cost-effective nitrogen sources but are alkaline and prone to volatilization. Mixing them with biogas slurry helps the nutrients dissolve better in the soil, improves absorption by plants, and increases fertilizer use efficiency. A common practice is to add 0.5 to 1 kg of ammonium bicarbonate or ammonia water to every 50 kg of biogas slurry.
Additionally, combining biogas sludge with superphosphate can improve the effectiveness of the latter, making it more available to crops. These combined approaches ensure that both organic and inorganic nutrients work together to maximize crop productivity and soil health.
