Dalbergia nigra, commonly known as Brazilian rosewood or jacaranda, is primarily native to Brazil. This species is highly valued for its unique appearance and durability. One of the most distinctive features of this wood is its clearly defined growth rings, which can be easily observed with the naked eye. The heartwood typically ranges in color from black-brown to chocolate or purple-brown, often featuring striking black streaks that run through the grain.
Under a magnifying glass, the vessel elements are quite visible, with a maximum diameter of up to 287 μm and an average of around 143 μm. The number of these vessels per square millimeter is relatively low, ranging from 2 to 7. The axial parenchyma is also clearly visible, mainly in the form of paratracheal type, with narrow bands (1–2 cells wide) arranged in bundles. These structures often exhibit a star-like pattern, distinguishing it from other Dalbergia species.
The wood fibers have thin to thick walls, contributing to the overall strength and stability of the material. The wood rays are prominent under magnification, showing distinct undulations. The ray tissue consists of multiple rows, typically 2 to 3 columns wide, and exhibits a profile type III, which is quite noticeable. When freshly cut, the wood has a strong acidic scent, and its texture is fine, slightly coarser than some other hardwoods. It displays a characteristic irregular grain pattern and has an air-dry density between 0.86 and 1.01 g/cm³, making it one of the densest and most valuable woods in the world.
