Global LCD monitor shipped or reduced 2.8% in 2013

Global LCD monitor shipments declined by 2.8% in 2013 According to market research firm WitsView, the global LCD monitor market, including all-in-one (AIO) products, experienced a slight contraction in 2013, with total shipments projected to hover around 165 million units. This represents an annual decline of approximately 2.8%, indicating a continuation of the downward trend observed over recent years. Of these, desktop LCD monitor shipments are estimated at 151 million units, showing a yearly decrease of 3.7%. Meanwhile, AIO model shipments are expected to reach approximately 14 million units, marking an annual growth rate of around 8.1%. In terms of screen sizes, WitsView highlighted that the global LCD monitor market in 2013 was significantly influenced by the introduction of new sizes. One of the standout models is the 19.5-inch display, which has quickly gained popularity among manufacturers. The primary reason for this preference lies in its optimal positioning between 18.5 inches and 20 inches. In 2012, the trio of 18.5 inches, 19 inches, and 20 inches accounted for a substantial portion—around 44%—of total LCD monitor shipments. Consequently, the emergence of 19.5-inch models is expected to play a crucial role in driving future market trends. For panel manufacturers, strategic shifts in production focus towards higher-margin products, such as those used in LCD TVs and tablets, are likely to result in a sustained decline in LCD monitor panel output. Interestingly, producing 19.5-inch panels on sixth-generation panel lines offers similar cutting efficiency to 18.5-inch panels, allowing for 24-panel layouts per sheet. This innovation helps optimize glass utilization rates, making it a financially attractive option for producers. Although only CMO (3481) initiated mass production of 19.5-inch monitor panels in 2012, both LG Display and AUO (2409) are expected to enter this segment in 2013. Their involvement could push the market share of 19.5-inch panels to exceed 7% by the end of the year. Looking ahead, WitsView expressed cautious optimism regarding the LCD monitor market in 2013. From a consumer perspective, three key factors are likely to impact demand: first, global economic conditions remain uncertain, prompting consumers to tighten their budgets; second, despite expectations surrounding Microsoft's Windows 8 launch, the PC market continues to face stiff competition from tablets and smartphones; third, the growing trend toward slim and stylish designs could pose a threat to traditional desktop setups, as ultrabooks and ultra-thin notebooks become increasingly affordable. In conclusion, while the LCD monitor industry faces challenges, the rise of innovative products like the 19.5-inch displays provides some hope for stabilizing the market amidst broader technological shifts.
