The hardware spring industry, though small in scale within the broader manufacturing sector, plays a crucial role in supporting key industries such as automotive and industrial manufacturing. As the nation's industrial and automotive sectors continue to grow rapidly, the need for high-quality springs—essential components in machinery and vehicles—has become even more critical. This demand calls for sustained development of the spring industry to keep pace with national progress. Moreover, expanding product variety and improving quality are essential not only for replacing outdated mechanical equipment but also for enhancing the performance of the systems they support. Therefore, the growth of the spring industry is vital to the overall development of the country’s manufacturing base. In the daily necessities and hardware sectors, which include items like lighters, toys, locks, door hinges, gym equipment, mattresses, and sofas, the demand for springs is enormous—reaching hundreds of billions of units annually. These springs typically have low technical requirements and are produced by small-scale manufacturers spread across the country. Their cost advantages make it difficult for large spring companies to compete. According to Luo Baihui, Secretary-General of the International Mould and Hardware and Plastics Industry Suppliers Association, the strong domestic demand for daily-use hardware has driven the growth of the spring market. As a result, new spring companies have emerged regularly. Looking ahead, the market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 7% to 10%. Following China's accession to the WTO, the export of daily hardware products has surged, further boosting spring demand. However, international market fluctuations and trade barriers introduce uncertainties that the industry must navigate. In the instrumentation and electrical appliances sector, the recovery of markets such as brush springs, switch springs, camera springs, computer keyboard springs, and other instrumentation-related springs has been notable. These springs often include leaf and guide types, with varying technical specifications. In recent years, the domestic instrumentation and electronics industries have faced challenges due to competition from imported products, leading to sluggish growth. Spring manufacturers supporting these sectors were affected but have recently shown signs of recovery. The industrial and mineral products market has also seen changes, shifting from textile machinery cradle springs to chemical springs, power station switches, bulldozer springs, and more. This market covers various industrial sectors outside of transportation. The demand for springs here is closely tied to the production material market and infrastructure projects. While this sector had previously struggled due to industrial restructuring, it has started to recover, though it remains in a state of adjustment. The hardware spring industry is calling for the adoption of international standards to align with global benchmarks. After years of development, domestically produced springs have seen significant improvements in quality and grade. However, with the rapid expansion of industries such as automobiles, power generation, rail transport, and urban public transit, the spring industry faces new challenges. Previously, domestic companies could only cope with these issues through trial and error. But as they have developed advanced technologies, problems related to raw materials and equipment have become more prominent. Some companies are forced to import costly materials, making raw materials and production equipment key constraints on the industry's growth. Although progress has been made in metallurgy and equipment manufacturing, current supply still falls short of meeting the needs of high-end applications. To address these challenges, the association has focused on developing relevant standards and involving key companies as governing members. These firms participate in market research, product development, and quality assurance initiatives, working together to advance the industry. As the spring industry moves beyond price wars and service competition, it is now entering a stage where standardized practices are essential. Although the current standard system is relatively complete, many standards were formulated too early and no longer match modern market demands. They often exist only as formal documents rather than practical guidelines. Compared to standards in Japan, Europe, and the United States, China’s national and industry standards remain lower, weakening the international competitiveness of domestic spring products. As a result, there is a growing call among industry representatives for the introduction of new, internationally aligned standards.
