Introduction to Rich Bamboo Cultivation Methods:
Soil Culture
Rich bamboo is a resilient and valuable plant that thrives in moist, fertile, and well-drained soils. It prefers sandy loam or alluvial clay with good drainage. The ideal temperature range for its growth is between 20°C and 28°C, though it can tolerate temperatures as low as 2°C to 3°C. However, during winter, frost protection is essential to avoid damage. The hot and humid seasons of summer and autumn are particularly beneficial for rich bamboo, making them the optimal growing periods. This plant does not require full sunlight and grows best under bright, indirect light. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause leaf yellowing, chlorosis, and stunted growth.
Therefore, when planting in the field, it's recommended to use a shade net with a 75% shading rate, creating a semi-shaded, scattered light environment. Especially from April to September, it’s important to protect the plant from direct sun, excessive heat, or drought, as these conditions can lead to rough, dry, and dull leaves, reducing its ornamental value. During the growing season, keep the soil consistently moist and mist the surface regularly to maintain humidity. In rainy weather, ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging and lodging. In winter, when temperatures drop below 10°C, the leaves may turn yellow. At this time, reduce watering and stop fertilizing, keeping the soil slightly dry but not completely dry.
Rich bamboo has strong roots and buds, making it easy to propagate through cuttings. Cuttings can be taken throughout the year if the temperature is suitable. Typically, stem segments without leaves, about 5-10 cm long and preferably containing three internodes, are used. These are inserted into sand beds or half-muddy sand. In southern regions during spring and autumn, roots and shoots usually appear within 25-30 days, and the plants can be transplanted after about 35 days.
Water Propagation
Rich bamboo can also be propagated using water and soilless methods. In recent years, many areas in Guangdong have successfully rooted cuttings by cutting the tender top stems (about 20-25 cm) and inserting them directly into sandy or semi-muddy soil. With careful care, they can be harvested for the Spring Festival. Farmers in Haiyan Town, Taishan City, for example, can insert cuttings directly into the ground during spring and autumn. They can also take 15-20 cm cuttings with both top and bottom buds from October to December, burying them two nodes deep in coarse sand or semi-muddy soil. Watering once daily keeps the soil moist, and rooting typically occurs within 35-45 days.
Spring cuttings are most effective from late January (after the Great Cold) to mid-to-late February (before and after the Rain). These can be planted directly in the field, and roots usually form within 30-35 days. Another ideal period is from mid-March to early April (around the Spring Equinox and Qingming), especially in late March. As temperatures and humidity gradually rise, rooting can occur within 7-15 days, achieving a 100% survival rate. With proper care, these plants can be ready for sale within the same year.
