**Introduction to Rich Bamboo Farming Methods**
Rich bamboo, known for its lush and vibrant appearance, thrives in warm, humid environments with high fertility. It prefers well-drained sandy soil or semi-muddy sand mixed with alluvial clay. The ideal temperature range for growth is between 20°C and 28°C, and it can tolerate temperatures as low as 2°C to 3°C, though frost protection is essential during winter.
The hot and humid seasons of summer and autumn are particularly beneficial for rich bamboo growth, making them the optimal growing periods. This plant is not overly sensitive to light, but it grows best under bright, indirect light. Excessive sunlight can cause leaf yellowing, chlorosis, and slow growth. To protect against this, farmers often use shade nets with a 75% shading rate, creating a semi-shaded environment. During April to September, direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent leaf damage and maintain ornamental quality.
Throughout the growing season, maintaining consistent soil moisture is crucial. Regular misting or watering helps increase air humidity. In rainy seasons, proper drainage must be ensured to prevent lodging. In winter, when temperatures drop below 10°C, leaves may turn yellow. At this time, watering should be reduced, and fertilization should stop to avoid overwatering and root rot.
Propagation of rich bamboo is typically done through cuttings. Healthy stem segments without leaves, about 5–10 cm long (with 3 internodes), are inserted into a sand bed or half-muddy sand. In southern regions, roots and buds usually appear within 25–30 days during spring and autumn, and the plants can be transplanted after 35 days.
Water propagation is also an effective method. In Guangdong, top branches (tender stems) measuring 20–25 cm are directly inserted into sandy soil or semi-muddy fields. With proper care, these cuttings can be ready for sale by the Spring Festival. Farmers in Haiyan Town, Taishan City, often insert cuttings directly into the field during spring and autumn. Cuttings of 15–20 cm with both top and bottom buds can be taken from October to December, buried 2 nodes deep, and watered daily until rooted, which usually takes 35–45 days.
Spring cuttings are most successful between late January (after the Great Cold) and mid-February (before and after the Rain). These can be directly planted in the field, and roots typically form within 30–35 days. Cuttings taken between mid-March and early April (around the Spring Equinox and Qingming) have even higher success rates due to increasing temperatures and humidity, with rooting occurring within 7–15 days. With proper care, these plants can be sold within the same year.
