Shanxi Further Consolidates Coal Resources and Pays Attention to Coal Mine Safety

In 2011, Shanxi Province made significant progress by successfully completing the consolidation of its coal resources and the merger of smaller mines, transitioning into an era of modern mining practices. This effort has greatly enhanced the safety standards within the province's coal industry. As a result, the fatality rate per million tons of coal mined has dropped significantly to just 0.085. This year, starting from August 10th, Shanxi launched a comprehensive campaign focusing on several critical areas of coal mine safety. These efforts included renovations for mines that needed upgrading, integrating weaker operations, addressing issues related to gas and water management, improving overall mine management, and strengthening supervisory oversight. The goal was to ensure safer operations across the board, particularly in high-priority coal mines, over a 100-day period. By mid-November, this initiative led to the closure of over 200 mines, suspension of operations at many others, and revocation of licenses where necessary. During this period, safety inspections and隐患排查were conducted statewide. The provincial government dispatched 11 specialized inspection teams to cover all 11 cities under their jurisdiction. These teams meticulously reviewed 374 mines, identifying over 6,500 minor hazards and 29 major ones. Their actions resulted in the closure of 15 mines, temporary shutdowns for another 195, license cancellations for 23 mines, and financial penalties totaling 1.2 million yuan. These intensive measures reflect Shanxi’s ongoing commitment to enhancing coal mine safety standards and ensuring that every aspect of mining operations adheres to strict safety protocols. While substantial progress has been made, continuous vigilance remains crucial to maintain these improvements and safeguard workers' lives.
