Siemens and Airbus to develop electric aircraft

Airbus Chief Technology Officer Paul Elemenko recently announced that Airbus will cooperate with German Siemens and British engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce to jointly develop electric hybrid aviation for commercial aircraft. The engine, the so-called "E-Fan X" engine, is expected to make its first test flight by 2020.

Elemenko stated that the E-Fan X is an important step for the electric aircraft to become a reality in the foreseeable future. It is believed that the electric hybrid engine is a reliable technology for the future aviation industry. Airbus will cooperate with Siemens. Rolls-Royce teamed up to create this technology.

The partners plan to replace an ordinary engine with an electric hybrid engine on a four-engine BAe 146 commercial aircraft, and replace it after obtaining good test results. The megawatt electric motor is manufactured by Siemens, and the power generator is manufactured by Rolls-Royce.

From April 2016, Siemens and Airbus have collaborated on the development of an electric engine for small planes at Ottobrunn in Munich, Germany, known as the "Air Taxi." At present, this project is still only on the ground. In October 2017, a start-up company in Seattle announced that it will develop an electric hybrid engine for small commercial aircraft by 2022. This project won venture capital investment from Boeing and Blue Line. Siemens and Airbus’s project was seen as competing with the U.S. electric aircraft project. (Reporter Gu Gang)
