China Aluminum Industry Network reports that the preparation and processing technologies for titanium aluminides are mainly categorized into four key methods:
(1) Ingot metallurgy technology;
(2) Powder metallurgy technology;
(3) Rapid solidification technology;
(4) Composite material technology.
Among these, ingot metallurgy is one of the traditional approaches, but it often suffers from issues such as segregation and an uneven microstructure in the final product. On the other hand, titanium aluminide powders produced through rapid solidification technology exhibit a more stable chemical composition and better processability. However, their microhardness tends to vary with changes in heat treatment temperature, which can affect their overall performance.
The composite material technology offers promising results in terms of enhanced mechanical properties, but challenges remain in improving lateral strength, environmental resistance, and long-term stability. Meanwhile, powder metallurgy has emerged as a favorable method for producing small, homogeneous components with near-net shape, which is particularly beneficial for the fabrication of complex-shaped parts that are difficult to form using conventional techniques.
Currently, two main powder production methods are used: the elemental powder method and the pre-alloyed powder method. While both have their advantages, the elemental powder method is more commonly adopted by researchers in China due to its flexibility and cost-effectiveness. As the demand for high-performance titanium aluminides continues to grow, further research and development in these technologies will be essential to overcome existing limitations and expand their industrial applications.
