[China Aluminum Industry Network] The preparation and processing technologies for titanium aluminum alloys mainly include the following methods:
(1) Ingot metallurgy;
(2) Powder metallurgy;
(3) Rapid solidification;
(4) Composite material techniques.
Traditional ingot metallurgy faces challenges such as segregation and an uneven microstructure, which can affect the mechanical properties of the final product. On the other hand, titanium aluminum alloy powders produced through rapid solidification technology exhibit a more stable chemical composition and better processability. However, their microstructure and microhardness can vary depending on the heat treatment temperature, which may influence their performance in different applications.
The composite material approach offers promising strengthening effects, but issues such as lateral strength and environmental resistance still need further investigation. Meanwhile, powder metallurgy is particularly advantageous for producing small, homogeneous components with near-net shape, which helps overcome the difficulties associated with forming titanium-aluminum intermetallic alloys.
Currently, two main powder production methods are used: elemental powder blending and pre-alloyed powder. Among these, the elemental powder method is more commonly adopted by domestic researchers due to its flexibility and control over composition. However, each technique has its own set of advantages and limitations, and ongoing research aims to improve the performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of titanium aluminum alloys for industrial applications.
