The whole genome sequencing of peanuts, led by Chinese scientists, was officially announced this afternoon. This groundbreaking achievement marks the first time such a project has been completed globally. According to experts, this development is set to significantly reshape China’s edible oil market.
The research focused on diploid wild peanuts and involved scientists from China, India, and the United States. One of the key findings is that 70% of the peanut genome consists of repeated sequences, which challenges the previously accepted 50% standard in the international scientific community. This discovery offers new opportunities to boost the oil yield of peanuts dramatically.
Yan Shanlin, chief scientist of the National Peanut Industry System, said, “If we can increase the oil content from the current 50% to over 60%, we will be able to achieve major breakthroughs, such as producing better tofu or higher-quality oils.â€
With this newly mapped "genetic blueprint," scientists can now more efficiently develop high-quality, drought-resistant, and disease-resistant peanut varieties. The breeding cycle, which currently takes 5 to 6 years, could be reduced to just 1 to 2 years.
In addition, since domestic edible oil mainly comes from peanut and soybean oils, and soybean oil relies heavily on imported genetically modified soybeans, this new research opens up the possibility of developing alternative oil sources. Experts believe that molecular breeding of peanuts could soon lead to new varieties that may replace genetically modified soybean oil.
Li Hongjie, Research Director at Shandong Shengfeng Seed Industry Technology Co., Ltd., told reporters, “Through genome sequencing, we can breed high-yield and high-oil peanut varieties, increasing the self-sufficiency rate of edible oil from the current 43% to around 50%. This would reduce reliance on imported genetically modified soybeans and mark an important direction for the future of China’s oil industry.â€
