This year, while domestic coal production and prices have both seen a decline, the coal industry in Xinjiang has continued to thrive. It is now projected that Xinjiang’s coal output will surpass 160 million tons, marking a year-on-year growth of 13.7%. This impressive performance highlights the region’s strong momentum in energy production despite broader economic challenges.
From January to May this year, Xinjiang produced 51.9356 million tons of raw coal, an increase of 3.3949 million tons compared to the same period last year, representing a 6.2% growth rate. In a context where national economic growth has slowed and inflation pressures have risen, Xinjiang’s industrial sector has shown resilience. Industrial enterprises above designated size saw a nearly 11% increase in output compared to the same period last year, outperforming the national average by 1.5%.
The coal industry remains a key driver of growth in the region. By the end of May, coal sales in Xinjiang exceeded 575.76 million tons, up 10.3% from the previous year. Direct sales by coal mining companies reached 22,961,100 tons, a 25.5% increase compared to the previous year. State-owned local coal mines sold over 53.6 million tons, rising by 29.6%, while township coal mines reported sales of 27,435,800 tons, a slight decrease of 2.4% from the previous year.
Investment in Xinjiang’s coal industry totaled 4.349 billion yuan, showing a year-on-year growth of nearly 2 percentage points. Coal projects are progressing smoothly, with industrial enterprises above designated size consuming over 43.77 million tons of coal—up 19.7% from the previous year. A survey of major coal mining companies revealed that the total new coal demand in the region exceeded 35 million tons this year. Key industries driving this demand include chemicals, power generation, construction materials, and metallurgy.
Notably, only a small portion of coal is exported, with the majority being consumed locally. The region’s internal coal consumption reached over 30 million tons, while coal sales outside Xinjiang were approximately 5 million tons.
What stands out is that Xinjiang’s coal industry growth rate closely mirrors the region’s overall economic growth. Despite external challenges, the coal sector continues to develop steadily. Based on annual demand analysis, it is expected that coal production in the second half of the year will surpass the 160 million ton mark.
