This year, while domestic coal production and prices have both seen a decline, Xinjiang's coal sector has shown remarkable resilience. The region is expected to produce over 160 million tons of coal this year, marking a year-on-year increase of 13.7%. This growth highlights the strong performance of Xinjiang’s energy sector amid broader economic challenges.
From January to May, Xinjiang produced 51.9356 million tons of raw coal, an increase of 3.3949 million tons compared to the same period last year, representing a 6.2% growth rate. This outperforms the national average, as industrial output in the region grew by nearly 11%, surpassing the national level by 1.5 percentage points. In this context, the coal industry remains one of the top contributors to Xinjiang’s economic development.
By the end of May, total coal sales in Xinjiang exceeded 575.76 million tons, up 10.3% from the previous year. Direct sales from coal mining enterprises reached 22,961,100 tons, reflecting a 25.5% growth. State-owned local coal mines sold more than 53.6 million tons, rising by 29.6% year-on-year, while township coal mines saw a slight decline of 2.4% in sales.
Investment in Xinjiang’s coal industry totaled 4.349 billion yuan, showing a nearly 2% year-on-year increase. Coal projects are progressing smoothly, and industrial enterprises above the designated size consumed over 43.77 million tons of coal, a 19.7% rise compared to the previous year. A detailed analysis of key coal producers revealed that the region’s demand for new coal exceeded 35 million tons this year, with major sectors such as chemicals, power, construction materials, and metallurgy being the primary consumers.
Only a small portion of coal is exported, with over 30 million tons used within the region and about 5 million tons sold outside. Notably, Xinjiang’s coal growth rate has closely matched the pace of the national economy, demonstrating the sector’s stability and long-term potential. Based on current trends and annual demand projections, coal production in the second half of the year is expected to surpass 160 million tons, with the total demand for coal estimated to exceed 180 million tons this year.Underground Light
