A few days ago, a massive inflatable tent erected on the former site of the Hangzhou Pesticide Factory drew public attention. This morning, with the approval of local authorities, I was granted access to the site for an exclusive visit to what is being called "the largest tent in history."
As I entered the construction area, the smell of chemicals became more intense. Air fresheners and warning signs reminding visitors to wear gas masks were prominently displayed. Most workers on-site were seen wearing gas masks that resembled pig noses, clearly indicating the hazardous environment. The entrance to the inflatable structure remained sealed, and no one was allowed inside, leaving the interior completely unknown. Nearby, several thermal desorption units stood in place, their transparent membranes revealing a mess of contaminated soil inside.
Wu, the manager from Hangzhou Dadi Environmental Protection Co., Ltd., explained that the inflatable tent had been under construction for nearly two weeks. Once internal systems are fully adjusted, it will be used for treating polluted soil. The structure, made of a polyester fiber membrane, is designed to contain harmful gases, while thermal desorption equipment will help remove contaminants from the soil, aiming to achieve effective environmental purification.
