At present, most farmers have already harvested their pears, and the orchards are being cleared. To ensure high-quality pear trees for the upcoming season, it's crucial for pear growers to start applying the base fertilizer immediately after clearing the orchards. This base fertilizer, also known as a reducing fertilizer, plays a vital role in determining the yield and quality of pears in the next growing cycle.
The timing and amount of base fertilizer application directly impact the productivity and fruit quality. First, base fertilizer is the primary nutrient source for pear trees, making up the largest portion of the total fertilization needs during the production cycle. From September to November, pear tree roots enter their second growth peak, making this period ideal for fertilization. At this time, nutrients break down more quickly, allowing new roots to absorb and store essential elements efficiently.
Additionally, prolonged nutrient absorption helps increase cell fluid concentration, which enhances the tree's ability to withstand winter conditions. The base fertilizer also has a long-lasting effect, providing critical nutrients during the key growth phase in April and May, when the tree needs it most. Early nutrient uptake improves flower bud development, leading to better fruit set and higher sugar content. Moreover, applying base fertilizer in autumn prevents excessive spring growth that could result in frost damage.
To apply the base fertilizer effectively, several technical considerations should be followed. First, choose the best time for fertilization. While base fertilizer can be applied from after harvest until spring bud emergence, the optimal period is in the fall, ideally between September and November.
Second, select high-quality organic fertilizer. Organic matter improves soil structure, increases fertility, and reduces the fixation of inorganic nutrients by the soil. A typical recommendation is 50 kg of manure or compost per tree, along with 1 kg of phosphate and 1 kg of nitrogen fertilizer, or 5–15 kg of various bio-organic compound fertilizers. Base fertilizer should make up 60–70% of the annual total.
Third, use flexible fertilization methods based on tree age and local practices. For newly fruit-bearing trees, ring fertilization works well. Ditch fertilization can be used following root orientation, while strip ditches between rows or deep holes are other effective options. These methods should be alternated annually to avoid overuse. Deep application, especially in autumn and winter, should reach 30–50 cm to maximize efficiency. In dry conditions, irrigation should be done promptly to combine water and fertilizer effectively.
