When using high-quality hardwoods such as yellow pear, red sandalwood, mahogany, chicken wing wood, and rosewood, with proper care and maintenance, these pieces can be passed down through generations. Here are some effective ways to maintain the longevity of your wooden furniture:

First, there are two main types of traditional finishes. Older pieces often have a natural wax finish without paint, while modern ones are usually protected with lacquer or varnish. The maintenance methods differ depending on the type of finish applied.

Second, hardwood contains moisture, which makes it sensitive to humidity levels. If the air is too dry, the wood may shrink, and if it's too humid, it might expand. Although manufacturers build in some shrinking layers during production, it’s important to avoid placing your furniture in overly dry or wet areas. For example, keep it away from direct heat sources like radiators or basements that tend to be damp, as this can lead to warping, cracking, or mildew.

Third, if you live in a low-rise building, make sure to elevate the furniture if the floor is prone to moisture. This helps prevent the legs from getting corroded over time.

Fourth, when moving or handling furniture, always do so gently. Avoid pulling heavy items by their drawers or doors, as this can damage the structure. When lifting tables or chairs, lift them from the base rather than the top. For cabinets, remove the doors before lifting to reduce weight and prevent door misalignment. For very heavy furniture, use a soft rope under the frame and lift carefully to avoid strain.

Fifth, avoid placing heavy objects like TVs or fish tanks directly on the surface for long periods. This can cause the furniture to warp. Also, never place non-breathable materials like plastic sheets on the table, as they can trap moisture and damage the surface.

Sixth, if your room has uneven floors, it can lead to furniture deformation over time. To prevent this, use small wooden shims to level the furniture properly.

Seventh, never use wet or rough cloths, especially on antique furniture. Instead, use a clean, soft cotton cloth and occasionally apply a small amount of furniture wax or walnut oil. Gently rub along the grain of the wood to keep it looking its best.

Eighth, avoid rubbing hard objects against the furniture surface, as this can scratch the paint or damage the wood. When placing decorative items like porcelain or bronze sculptures, use a soft cloth to protect the surface.

Ninth, avoid positioning your furniture in front of large south-facing windows. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can dry out the wood and cause fading over time.

Tenth, never place hot cups or containers directly on the furniture surface, as they can leave permanent marks. Similarly, avoid spilling colored liquids like ink on the table, as they can stain and damage the finish.
