Escalator design

The steps of the early escalators were made of wood. Since the fire broke out at the London Underground Railway Station in 1987, most of the wooden steps still in use have been converted to metal. The steps of modern escalators are made of metal, and each step below is a triangular bracket. The bottom of the bracket is two high and low shafts with wheels on the shaft. The two wheels on each side walk on different tracks, keeping the steps horizontal by changing the distance between the tracks. The wheels above each step bracket are hinged.

An electric motor is arranged under the top of the escalator to drive the hinge to move the steps. When the steps reach the end of the escalator, they will first turn into a flat row to let the passengers leave, then pass the comb, then turn down to the bottom, and go in the other direction, becoming an endless circle. The side panels of some new escalators are made of glass, and this mechanical construction is clearly visible. As for the armrests on both sides, it is made of rubber, and it is driven by a runner, and the speed is kept consistent with the steps.

Most escalators are straight. In 1985, Mitsubishi Electric of Japan first invented the curve operation, spiral type escalator. In addition to saving space, the spiral escalator is also very artistic. In addition, some escalators can be returned to the level in the middle section. This can reduce the fear of height when passengers use very long escalators, and can also be more flexible with the building.

When many people use the escalator, in addition to the escalator, they will use their legs to walk on the steps to save time. Therefore, when using the escalator, the standing passenger should rely on the same side of the ladder to give up the other side of the ladder for the walking person to use. However, different regions have different common rules about which side they should stand on. For example, the London Underground Railway, the Washington Underground Railway, the Kansai Railway in Japan, and the Taipei MRT, require passengers standing to the right; but Tokyo, Japan, requires passengers to stand on the left. The Montreal subway has no rules because they think passengers should not walk on the escalator at all.

The rules of the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway are based on the right. However, during peak hours, there are too many people using escalators. Many escalators are full of people on both sides. In mainland China, according to the recommendations of the China Elevator Association, passengers on escalators should try to stand on the right, but they really don't know much about this proposal.

In addition to the use of escalators, you should also pay attention to:

Always hold the handrail

Don't stand at the level

Do not put your head or hands out of the ladder, otherwise you may hit a ceiling or an adjacent escalator.

Don't run and play

Do not use escalators to carry goods. Lifts should be used for strollers, cargo carts, etc.

Passengers using wheel leaning and abduction should try to use lifts

To take care of children and the elderly

The escalator will have an emergency stop button for use in case of an accident.
