Hardware measuring tools are a vital segment within the broader field of measurement instruments. Over the years, the domestic hardware industry has made significant progress, with continuous innovation and technological advancement playing a key role in its growth. After decades of development, the hardware measuring tool sector has established a comprehensive product range, supported by a solid production base and strong R&D capabilities. This progress not only strengthens the industry’s position but also enhances the application and development of related instruments.
According to Luo Baihui, the secretary-general of the International Mould, Hardware and Plastic Industry Suppliers Association, China's hardware industry is growing at an impressive annual rate of 20%, with a total output value reaching 400 billion yuan. This surpasses that of the household appliance industry. The hardware sector contributes significantly to China’s light industry exports, accounting for around 25% of the country’s total exports. In fact, it leads the light industry in export volume. With hardware products now found all over the world, China has firmly positioned itself as a global hardware powerhouse.
Looking back, the overall level of China's hardware industry was once modest, with many small and medium-sized enterprises operating from low-end workshops. However, recent years have seen remarkable changes. First, there has been a notable improvement in personnel quality—such as the current manager of China Hardware City, the nation's largest hardware market, who holds a Ph.D. and postdoctoral degree. Second, the process and management standards have improved significantly, as seen in companies like Great Wall Precision, which now operate at high-tech and efficient levels.
From a process perspective, the domestic production level remains uneven, with many foreign companies using China as a manufacturing base. As a result, numerous international brands have entered the mainland market, bringing advanced technologies and management practices with them.
Currently, China is in a crucial phase of upgrading its hardware products—from mid-to-low-end to high-end production. This transition is beneficial for the industry, as it brings along advanced foreign processes, materials, and management models during the transfer of production.
Traditionally, the hardware industry includes tools such as manual, hydraulic, and power tools, which are rapidly evolving. Construction and decoration hardware also see fast replacement cycles. Additionally, there is a huge demand for hardware parts and components. For example, a small processing plant in Handan, Hebei, despite lagging in production, has a nationwide sales force of over 100,000 people. After more than a decade of growth, China has become the world's largest producer of hardware products, with consistent annual export increases.
Among the top exports, tool products lead with $5.34 billion, followed by construction hardware at $4.34 billion. Tap and lock exports reach $2.23 billion and $680 million respectively. Major markets include the U.S., Japan, Europe, and South Korea. The industry's exports grow by about 8% annually, with last year's hardware exports exceeding $5 billion, ranking third in light industry exports. With rising manufacturing standards and expanding production capacity, China's hardware industry is expected to maintain a growth rate of over 10% per year for the next five years.
In the first ten months of this year alone, the import and export volume of hardware and electromechanical products exceeded $500 billion, with a trade surplus of $7.06 billion—accounting for 64% of the national trade surplus in the same period.
Looking ahead, the Chinese hardware industry will become more diversified, with higher technological standards and better product quality. Combined with stricter industry regulations and supportive policies, the sector will continue to expand, offering great potential for future growth.|
