The pesticide network recently reported that some farmers, in an effort to accelerate the growth of melons in cucumber production, have been using high concentrations of pyridoxine to soak young fruits. This practice aims to achieve a "top flower thorns" effect, which is favored by vegetable merchants. Similarly, in the cultivation of cantaloupe and watermelon, certain farmers have applied high concentrations of pyridone to promote fruit enlargement. However, this has led to undesirable outcomes such as bitter-tasting fruits and cracked watermelons in later stages.
These short-term practices are not sustainable or safe. High concentrations of pyridoxine can be harmful to human health. A similar issue was observed in Zhouzhi County, Shaanxi Province, where kiwifruit sales suffered due to the use of swelling agents containing pyroxone. From a production standpoint, applying pyridoxine to cucumbers can lead to severe issues later on, such as bitter cantaloupes and cracked watermelons, which negatively impact yield and overall profitability.
To achieve fruit enlargement—whether for watermelon, cucumber, cantaloupe, or zucchini—farmers can adopt more effective and safer methods. When the fruit becomes visible, it’s recommended to spray the entire plant with Baomeiling diluted at 8000 times, combined with amino acid foliar fertilizer. At the same time, applying potassium fertilizer from Israel's Haifa company or a small amount of potassium nitrate can further support fruit development.
Baomeiling helps increase cell numbers in cucumbers, promotes the synthesis of leaf hydrolase, and regulates nutrient flow from the leaves to the reproductive organs, such as the melon tendrils. This process supports fruit growth and enables rapid development without compromising quality.
It is important for farmers to combine Baomeiling with foliar fertilizers. The spraying should be done during the early stage of fruit development. If plants show signs of abnormal leaf growth, such as downy mildew or excessive root growth, the treatment may not be effective. It’s crucial to ensure the plant is in normal growth conditions before applying these treatments to achieve the desired results.
By following these guidelines, farmers can improve fruit quality, enhance yields, and maintain long-term sustainability in their agricultural practices.
