Proper fit between the shaft, housing, and bearing is essential for ensuring smooth operation, reducing wear, and extending the service life of the bearing. When the shaft or housing is not manufactured to the required precision, it can lead to misalignment, increased stress concentration, and ultimately, premature failure of the bearing.
For example, if the shoulders on the shaft are not accurately machined, the inner and outer rings of the bearing may become misaligned. This misalignment increases stress at certain points, reduces the fatigue life of the bearing, and in severe cases, can cause damage to the cage or even result in welding (sintering) of the components.
In motor applications, the typical fit between the shaft and bearing is usually k5 or k6, while the fit between the bearing and the housing is typically K7. For a 6309 bearing, the following tolerances are generally recommended:
- Shaft roundness: 4–7 μm
- Shaft cylindricity: 4–7 μm
- Shoulder runout: 4 μm
- Housing roundness: 7–11 μm
- Housing cylindricity: 7–11 μm
- Shoulder runout: 4–7 μm
Additionally, the chamfers on both the shaft and housing must not interfere with the bearing's chamfers. The radius of the chamfer should not exceed the minimum specified value for the bearing’s chamfer dimensions.
