1. Manage your time wisely when drying your quilt. Exposure to sunlight for a short period helps cotton fibers expand slightly, which can improve the quilt’s softness and freshness. For instance, in winter, it's sufficient to dry your quilt for about 3 hours around 11 a.m. During other seasons, two hours is enough. However, if you leave it out for too long, the fibers won't continue to swell, so there's no need to keep it in the sun for extended periods. It's best to dry it for about an hour to ensure it’s fully dry without overexposing it to heat.
2. Different materials require different drying methods. If your quilt is made of synthetic fibers, avoid direct sunlight for too long, as excessive heat can cause the fibers to melt or become damaged. To protect it, cover the quilt with a thin cloth while drying in the sun. On the other hand, quilts filled with natural materials like down or wool have excellent moisture-wicking properties and don’t need frequent drying. If you do choose to air them outside, place a cloth over them for about an hour to let them breathe, then move them to a shaded area for another hour to finish drying gently.
3. Avoid beating the quilt. Many people think that slapping or beating a quilt helps remove dust, but this is not recommended. Cotton fibers are thick and brittle, and repeated tapping can cause them to break apart, turning into small particles that may affect the quality and comfort of the quilt. If the quilt is dusty, use a soft brush to gently remove the surface dust instead.
Proper care of your quilt not only extends its lifespan but also keeps it comfortable and hygienic. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and remember that gentle handling is key to maintaining the quality of your bedding.
