When selecting insulation materials for construction, it's essential to consider the common application types and design choices that align with the requirements outlined in GB/T 17369-1998, "Application Types and Basic Requirements for Building Insulation Materials." This standard ensures that the materials used are suitable for their intended purpose and meet safety and performance criteria.

Alongside thermal conductivity, other key factors such as water absorption, fire resistance, mechanical strength, and durability must also be taken into account. These properties vary depending on the type of insulation material, and detailed information can be found in the relevant classification guidelines. Choosing the right material is crucial for long-term performance and energy efficiency.

Insulating materials typically have a thermal conductivity value of 0.2 W/m·K or lower, which makes them effective at reducing heat transfer. By using high-quality insulation technologies and materials in both construction and industrial settings, significant energy savings can be achieved. For instance, one ton of mineral wool insulation installed in a building can save approximately one ton of oil annually.

A real-world example is the Anyuan Beili Energy-Saving Community in Beijing, where the coal saving rate reached 11.91 kg of standard coal per square meter per year. In industrial applications, proper insulation of equipment and pipelines can drastically reduce energy consumption and operational costs. It has been reported that good insulation practices can cut heat loss by up to 95%, and the initial investment in insulation materials can often be recouped within one year through energy savings.

Before 1980, China's development of thermal insulation materials was limited. Only a few factories were producing small quantities of materials like expanded perlite, vermiculite, slag wool, ultra-fine glass wool, and microporous calcium silicate. The industry had a very low production capacity, with only three types of loose cotton and calcium silicate materials available, totaling around 8,000 cubic meters annually. The quantity and quality of these products were insufficient to meet growing demands.

Among the most widely used energy-saving insulation materials, mineral wool stands out. It has been produced and applied for over a century and is known for its excellent thermal performance, fire resistance, and versatility. Its long history of use demonstrates its reliability and effectiveness in various insulation applications.
