Sichuan Province's electromechanical and high-tech products import and export achieved new breakthroughs

In 2012, Sichuan Province achieved a significant milestone in its foreign trade, particularly in the mechanical and electrical products and high-tech sectors. For the first time, the total import and export volume of mechanical and electrical products surpassed $40 billion, reaching $40.75 billion, which marked a remarkable increase of 31.2%. Similarly, the import and export of high-tech products reached $29.81 billion, rising by 33.7%. This growth was driven by strong exports, with mechanical and high-tech products reaching $25.37 billion and $17.48 billion respectively, showing impressive increases of 49.1% and 51.3%. Despite the global economic slowdown and weak international demand, Sichuan managed to maintain a robust pace in its foreign trade. The province's focus on scientific development and proactive measures helped sustain this momentum. As a result, the mechanical and high-tech industries not only expanded in scale but also improved in quality, achieving new levels in both quantity and ranking. One of the key highlights was the improvement in national rankings. In 2012, Sichuan's mechanical and electrical product exports ranked 9th nationally, up from 10th in the previous year. Meanwhile, high-tech product exports climbed to 6th place, moving up from 9th the year before, securing the top position in the Central China region. The share of these sectors in the province’s total foreign trade also increased significantly. Mechanical and electrical products accounted for 69% of the total, up 3.7 percentage points, while high-tech products made up 50.4%, crossing the 50% threshold for the first time. Exports of high-tech products rose from 39.9% to 45.1%, surpassing the national average. Additionally, the contribution of these sectors to overall foreign trade grew substantially. Mechanical and electrical exports contributed 85.5% to the province’s foreign trade, up from 76.4% in 2011. High-tech exports also saw an increase, contributing 66.2% to the total, up from 65.2% in the previous year. Another notable trend was the dominance of electronic information and equipment manufacturing in exports. With 19 categories of mechanical and electrical products exported, 13 of them exceeded $100 million in value. High-value-added and high-tech products, such as machinery and electronics, accounted for 90% of the total mechanical and electrical exports. Moreover, the number of enterprises engaged in import and export activities continued to grow. There were 2,370 companies with import and export performance, including 692 new entrants that contributed an additional $2.23 billion in trade. Several large enterprises, such as Hongfujin, saw over 50% growth, while others like Chuanqing, Honghua, and Ziyang Locomotive also experienced rapid expansion. Overall, 2012 marked a turning point for Sichuan’s foreign trade, especially in the mechanical and high-tech sectors. The province demonstrated resilience and strength, setting the stage for continued growth in the years to come. (Article source: Sichuan Provincial Department of Commerce)
