Sichuan Province's electromechanical and high-tech products import and export achieved new breakthroughs

In 2012, Sichuan Province made remarkable progress in the import and export of mechanical and electrical products and high-tech goods. Despite a global economic slowdown and weak international demand, the province managed to achieve significant growth in these sectors. The total import and export volume of mechanical and electrical products surpassed $40 billion for the first time, reaching $40.75 billion—an increase of 31.2%. Meanwhile, the import and export of high-tech products reached $29.81 billion, up by 33.7%. Specifically, exports of mechanical and electrical products amounted to $25.37 billion, while high-tech product exports hit $17.48 billion, growing by 49.1% and 51.3%, respectively—far outpacing the province’s overall trade growth and the national single-digit rate. One of the key highlights was the improvement in rankings. Sichuan’s mechanical and electrical product exports ranked 9th nationally in 2012, up from 10th the previous year. High-tech product exports climbed to 6th place, moving from 9th in 2011. This marked Sichuan as the top performer in the central region. Additionally, the share of mechanical and electrical and high-tech products in the province’s total foreign trade increased significantly. Mechanical and electrical exports accounted for 65% of the total, up 6.3 percentage points, while high-tech exports reached over 50% for the first time, surpassing the national average. Another notable achievement was the increased contribution of these sectors to the province’s trade. Mechanical and electrical imports and exports contributed 85.5% to total trade, up from 76.4% in 2011. High-tech products also saw a rise, with their contribution increasing to 66.2% from 65.2%. This demonstrated strong momentum and resilience in the face of challenging external conditions. Exports in the electronic information and equipment manufacturing sectors dominated the market. There were 19 categories of mechanical and electrical product exports, with 13 exceeding $100 million in value—a six-category increase from the previous year. High-value-added and high-tech products such as machinery and electronics accounted for 90% of the total mechanical and electrical exports, showing a clear shift toward more sophisticated and profitable commodities. Moreover, the number of enterprises engaged in import and export activities grew significantly. In 2012, 2,370 companies reported trade performance, with 692 new entrants contributing an additional $2.23 billion in trade volume. Several large companies, including Hongfujin, saw over 50% growth, while others like Chuanqing, Honghua, and Ziyang Locomotive also experienced rapid expansion. Even small and medium-sized enterprises showed strong growth, reflecting a balanced and dynamic trade environment across the province. Source: Sichuan Provincial Department of Commerce
